The Nittany Lion was first suggested in 1904 by a quick-thinking Penn State baseball player upon taunts by Princeton students that Penn State didn't have a mascot. The student-athlete replied that the Penn State campus is near Nittany Mountain, where the Nittany Lions roam. The Lion became recognized three years later and the rest is history.
